Learning Objectives
- Phytochemistry
The student after completing the course, should be able: 1) To acquire the principle of pharmaceutical science in the field of phytochemistry; 2) Define the physicochemical properties of natural products. 3)Illustrate, how to separate, identify and estimate the different active chemical constituents of the medicinal plants. 4) Acquire good knowledge about the uses of the different active constituents (essential oils – carbohydrates – bitter principles – resins – tannins) of the medicinal plants.

- Phytochemistry
PROGRAMME:
Primary and secondary metabolism
Biosynthetic pathways in vascular plants
Secondary metabolites: roles and functions
Definition of officinalis plant, medicinal plant, drug, phytocomplex
Factors influencing the content of active ingredients in a drug.
Role and Functions of the more important secondary metabolites.
Action mechanism of the more important secondary metabolites.
Acetate pathway: fatty acids and polyketides
Scikimate pathway: aromatic amino acids and phenylpropanoids
Mevalonate pathway : terpenoids and steroids
Alkaloids :Alkaloids deriving from ornithine, Alkaloids deriving from tyrosine, Indolic alkaloids, minor alkaloids
