Emanuele AMATA

Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical chemistry [CHIM/08]

Dr Emanuele Amata graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology in October 2006 at the University of Catania with final 110/110 cum laude. In November 2006, he started his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Catania focusing on the design and synthesis of new opioid ligands with reduced tolerance induction. During his third year of Ph.D. he moved as research Scholar at the University of Mississippi (Oxford-MS-USA) within the laboratory of Prof McCurdy where he worked on the synthesis of sigma receptor ligands. In 2010 he completed his Ph.D. studies and thus he moved in 2011 to Northeastern University (NEU) in Prof Michael Pollastri’Lab (Boston-MA-USA) as Postdoctoral Research Associate till 2013 working on design and synthesis of antiparasitic drugs. During his postdoctoral period he also spent a research period at Pfizer Inc (Cambridge-MA-USA) where he focused on a chemoinformatic project on human and trypanosoma kinases under the mentoring of Dr Simon Xi. Since 2013 he works at the University of Catania as Researcher and his work is actually focusing on sigma receptor system, light-activated anticancer drugs, heme oxigenases and on the development of databases and cheminformatics tools for medicinal chemistry.
